VP Mike Pence meets with Egypt’s president after delayed trip to Middle East over Jerusalem uproar.

Vice President Pence finally made it to the Middle East.

Pence met with Egyptian leader Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi Saturday during a twice delayed trip to the region.

The Veep initially meant to head to Egypt, Jordan and Israel and other countries in the area in December, but travel plans were scuttled after uproar following President Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

The trip was again delayed when the GOP tax plan was making its way through the Senate and Pence was kept in Washington in case he was needed as the tie-breaking vote.

Pence called for closer ties with Egypt while in Cairo and pointed to Trump’s efforts to forge stronger bonds with el-Sissi in his first year in office, “after a time when our countries seemed to be drifting apart.” Pence was expected to arrive in Israel Sunday evening.
